10 Steps to Learn Riding a Bicycle as an Adult Without an Instructor

By Tony Stramipz Leave a Comment

Learning to rid bicycle is not necessary for commute only. It is an emotion, a nostalgia that we somehow missed to learn in childhood. However, you can always stand up and decide to learn something.

Learning a bicycle is a lot like the way we should live and lead our life. Focus on the goal and do not look at the obstacle, or you will lose the balance. There are some more things that you need to know. For that, there are a few steps that will help you learn to ride a bicycle without an instructor. You can also practice with stunt scooter as well before actually getting into the whole process.

Pick a good location.

You are very new to learning bicycle. In this situation, you do not want to deal with traffic and all. So look for the traffic-free calm area. A good surface area is also something that you should not neglect. Yes, when you conquer the learning process, you can ride anywhere. For now, find a flat and smooth surface like your driveway. Don’t worry if you do not have space at home. Go to a nearby park or parking lot for practice. Do not forget to check the law of your state if riding in the parking area is legal.

But what if you want to ride in the grass?

You might be thinking you will not be hurt if you fall on the ground. It is true, but balancing becomes harder, and you have to pedal harder as well. If you are ready to take these challenges, then go for it.

Safety first

You cannot learn anything until you fall for once or twice in the process. But that does not mean you have to get bruises all over the body to learn it. Wear knee and elbow pads must as these areas are likely to get hurt often. Wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants to protect other areas as well. Baggy pants and skirts get caught by the gears and tires of a bicycle. Avoid these kinds of dangerous clothing while riding.

Do not forget the helmet.

Are you sure you want to learn a bicycle and keep this as your transport medium? Then never forget the helmet. It is not only illegal but also extremely dangerous. The head injury will heal over time, but the trauma never goes away. If you are afraid of the lasting impact of an accident, wear a helmet no matter professional or beginner.

Now start gliding

Whatever is your dominant side lift it over the bike and put the feet on the ground? Try to hold the bike between your legs. Feel your weight and keep up the balance well. Try to distribute your weight evenly so that the bike does not lean to aside. Sit straight and keep your feet on the ground.

When you start gliding start with pushing yourself, not the pedal, maintain the balance as much as you can when you are gliding. If you feel like you are falling, then immediately put your feet on the ground. Then repeat the process till you successfully learn it.

Keep the eyes towards your goal.

Riding a bicycle is just like how we should deal with our life. If you look at the obstacles, you will fall apart. Keep your eyes towards the goal that means where you are going by bicycle. It will help you balance better. Yeah, it is extremely tough to not look at obstacles at first. But after you practice for a while, you will learn.

At first, you will see that the bike is going to another direction in the circle. Do not stop for the perfect start. Keep going and then balance out in the way.

Now start pedaling

Keep your feet on the pedal, pointing upward. Push the pedal and keep the balance as much as you can. Going faster is a risky solution to maintain balance. Do not go too fast else you will face an accident. When you want to stop, do not just use your foot. Stop by using brakes and follow the system. The system stops pedaling, shift the weight to lower pedal and squeeze brakes. In earlier days, keep trying to practice often for mastering the process. The more you try, the faster you will learn.

Begin from a flat sideways or parking

You do not want to start riding and fall after a moment. If there are slopes, then you will have a hard time riding. Falls in slopes are longer, and you are likely to get hurt more. So start in smooth surface and slowly go for your goal.

Keep your bicycle in the most comfortable condition for yourself. Adjust the seat of the bicycle so that you can keep your feet flat on the surface. It is a good trick as you can stop yourself on the seat before falling. If you are trying to train your kids then give them a training wheel for more safety. They will enjoy riding as well.

Check the brakes

Before you start riding a bicycle you have to know your bicycle well. So check out if the brake works or not. You should check it while walking the bicycle and push the brake buttons. If you somehow find out that your bicycle does not have any brake then you have to slow down the speed. You have to do this by leaning forward and hold the pedal horizontally to your feet.

Final steps to start riding the bicycle

Now with everything prepared and you are ready to go out to experience how to ride a bicycle. Make sure you are going in the daytime. You do not want to bump to someone. However, if you have to go out at night then wear neon-colored clothing. Keep a headlight and reflective sticker for playing it safe.

Final verdict

Riding a bicycle is not as hard as it seems to be. The balancing part is crucial. If you master it, you are good to go. Do not give up in the midway, thinking that you can never do it. You will do it after a few practices. As much as you enjoyed stunt scooters, you will enjoy it as well.
